Caffeine and Your Health
The effect of coffee consumption on health is a highly debated arena. There are numerous studies that conflict due to other aspects in a persons' diet.
The effects can be broken down into three categories:
Beneficial effects:
The caffeine present in coffee has been shown to help alleviate several adverse symptoms. When caffeine is taken in moderate amounts (3, 8oz. cups a day), or just on an as needed basis, it can have positive results. The main symptoms that caffeine can help are:
- Migraines
- Headaches
- Fatigue/drowsiness
- Appetite suppressant
Side Effects:
Caffeine is a drug, and as with any other drug, usage will have side effects depending on the amount ingested. It is a central nervous system stimulant. Moderate amounts in a person that is not sensitive to the effects will not have the same adverse effect as the same amount in a person that is sensitive. Excessive use (10, 8 oz cups) of caffeine can cause worse side effects and has been linked to certain medical problems discussed below. The side effects most often experienced by caffeine consumption are as follows:
- Increased heart rate
- Diuresis (increased urination)
- Nausea, vomiting
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Tremors
- Difficulty sleeping
Effects on health issues:
Excessive intake of caffeine can have adverse affects on many health problems as well as create health problems. There are many studies that support high caffeine intake as causing issue with the following:
- Stillbirths
- Peptic Ulcers
- Coronary heart disease
- Fibrocystic breast disease
